The Lagos area Bombeiros has been running on a shoe-string for a number of years and during the devastating fires of 2003/4 a fire engine was totally burned out. If a local bank had not stepped in to buy a new one for them, it would have taken years to replace and with the risk of forest fires here, it is a very serious state to be in.
At present they are just about able to break even but with no money to pay for replacement equipment and other necessary items such as bandages, oxygen, fireproof gloves for the volunteers and many other things which are essential to run the service.
The government and Câmera contribute about 50% of the running cost, voluntary contributions have to make up the rest. A local group do fund-raising events – see the events page – and there is a bank account open for donations. This accepts standing orders for a yearly contribution to enable us to help the services to continue to operate, as well as one-off donations or larger gifts if some of you are able to run an event of your own. We would welcome any input you may have for helping in this appeal. We then combine the funds to enable bigger items to be bought. Please see the next page for details.
Every euro goes to buy the most important thing needed at the time as identified by the Commandante and volunteers of the Bombeiros.
At some time in our lives, we all have either needed or know someone close to us who has been grateful for the services provided by the fire brigade or paramedic team. As more people come here, the more these services are used and it follows that more money is needed to run it. Let us contribute to the community we have chosen to be in. For your safety and theirs, please help us to keep them operating in this area – you never know when you might need to call on them and rest assured they will answer the call when you do.
