Eighty four people attended the 10th annual Fund raising dinner/dance in aid of Lagoa Bombeiros held on March 31st which was a resounding success raising €2,135.00.
No sooner had I given the good news to Commandant Vitor Rio and I had the quotes for two Breathing apparatus that they were desperately in need of and I am happy to say these are now ordered and on the way to the Lagoa Station.
This year we changed our venue to the Hotel Garbe and of course when you make changes there are always some concerns but at the end of the evening many people who have supported us and attended the function over the years said that it was the best it had ever been. The food was excellent and the service we received from every member of staff was first class and I wouldn’t hesitate to hold a function at the Hotel again. Howard Scott Parkin from “Strings & Things” was our musician for the second year and his overall musical dexterity for music to listen to and music for dancing was the accompaniment for such a successful evening.
For those of you who missed our advertising you must have missed reading the regular advertising that ‘The Resident’ and ‘The Portugal News’ very kindly produced from the lovely posters designed & printed by Ian Frankland who also made all our tickets as a donation to the Bombeiros.
Thank you to all the people who gave to our raffle which brought in €530.00. We auctioned two rounds of golf from Boavista Golf and one from Pestana for which we are most grateful and Ken Tomsett from the Aero Algarve (Penina airport) who joined us for the evening gave a flight for the auction, we also auctioned the firemans hosefrom 1970 that was mounted and given last year by the bombeiros all these great prizes for auction brought a total of €400.00.
Every year Home (Hodson & Bancroft) from Lagoa have been very generous with their donation and added to this we received donations from people who could not attend the dance, Eddy & Maria, Norman & Celia, Ann & Tom, Mr Hitchinson, Mr & Mrs Usher, Vicki Tayler, Margaret & Ernie & Alex. Thank you all, this brought a total from donations of €425.
These functions only run smoothly with lot’s of organization and a great deal of help and for this I would like to thank Do, Julia, Maria, Celia, Maureen and Brian.

As in many professions New Rules & New Laws are effecting the Bombeiros. Unfortunately there is never enough money to comply to the new laws to maintain the old and to buy the new and extra equipment that is required for the men and women who put their lives on the line to serve the community.
We have a fund for the Bombeiros where donations can be paid to, we do this so that the men and woman who perform their Job voluntarily can say what is required for them to carry on their good work safely and efficiently, when we have the money required we purchase the goods.
