Local men and women from communities in the Algarve volunteer to give their time to work as fire-fighters and ambulance personnel. These people, known as Portugal's 'Bombeiros', put their lives at risk to protect people, livestock and property from the ravages of fire, flood and devastation.
With no support from central government, and only a small amount of funds from the local Câmaras (Town Councils), the Bombeiros are dependent upon donations from the community to keep them supplied with the equipment and clothing essential to the job they do. Fund raising groups organise events and other initiatives to supply these funds and by working closely with the area Commandants identify priority needs to resource these requirements. Every euro collected goes directly to meeting these priorities.
Whether you are a resident, frequent visitor, perhaps with a holiday home, or someone visiting the Algarve for the first time, we are all dependent on these courageous volunteers for our safety and well being.
